Business credit isn't built by paying bills on time alone. It's built by reporting payments to business credit bureaus — and most vendors don't report by default. Here's the actual sequence that builds a real Paydex score and a usable D&B file.
Step 1 — Get the foundations right
- Form a legal entity — LLC or corporation. Sole proprietors can't build business credit separate from personal credit.
- Get an EIN from the IRS.
- Open a business bank account in the entity's legal name.
- Get a real business phone number and address — lenders verify both.
- Make sure your business is listed in 411 directories.
Step 2 — Register with the credit bureaus
- Dun & Bradstreet — request a free DUNS number at dnb.com.
- Experian Business — your business gets a file automatically once vendors start reporting.
- Equifax Small Business — same.
Step 3 — Open Tier 1 vendor tradelines
Tier 1 vendors give net-30 terms to new businesses and report payments to at least one business bureau. Open 3–5 of them, charge small amounts, and pay early.
- Uline (office, packaging, shipping supplies).
- Quill (office supplies).
- Grainger (industrial supplies).
- Crown Office Supplies.
- Summa Office Supplies.
Step 4 — Add Tier 2 business credit cards
Once you have 3+ Tier 1 tradelines reporting for 60–90 days, apply for business cards from issuers that report to business bureaus and don't pull personal credit. Examples include Brex (revenue-based) and Ramp.
Step 5 — Build to Tier 3 store and fleet credit
After 6–12 months of clean reporting, you can apply for store cards (Home Depot Commercial, Lowe's Commercial, Amazon Business), fleet cards (WEX, Fuelman), and eventually traditional bank business cards that use your business credit profile.
What not to do
- Don't pay 'guaranteed approval' programs. No one can guarantee credit.
- Don't use personal guarantees you don't need to. Some Tier 1 vendors approve without a PG.
- Don't max out new tradelines. Utilization above 30% lowers your file.
- Don't open everything at once. Spread applications over 2–3 weeks to avoid red flags.
Frequently asked questions
How long does it take to build business credit?+
A usable Paydex score from 3–5 reporting tradelines can be achieved in 60–90 days. A bank-grade business credit file takes 12–24 months.
Does paying my business utility bills help?+
Only if the utility reports to a business bureau — most don't. Use eCredable Lift or similar services to get utility payments reported.
Do I need good personal credit to start?+
For most Tier 1 vendors, no. For business cards from major banks, yes — they pull personal credit and require a personal guarantee.
