Can an LLC Get a Grant? Yes — Here's How (and Why Most Don't)

LLCs can and do receive grants. But the eligibility landscape is narrower than for nonprofits. Here's what's actually available and how to qualify.

Yes — an LLC can absolutely apply for and win grants. The catch is that most large grant programs were built for nonprofits, researchers, and local governments, not for-profit small businesses. The grants that do exist for LLCs are real, recurring, and worth pursuing — if you know where to look.

The short answer

An LLC is a legal entity that can receive funds, sign contracts, and report on outcomes — everything a funder needs. There is no rule that says LLCs can't get grants. There are rules in each specific program about who qualifies.

What LLCs can realistically apply for

  • Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) / STTR — federal R&D grants for tech-forward businesses.
  • State economic development grants — workforce, equipment, expansion, rural, and disaster-recovery funds.
  • Corporate grant programs — Comcast RISE, FedEx Small Business Grant, Verizon Small Business Digital Ready.
  • Demographic-specific programs — minority-owned, women-owned, veteran-owned, LGBTQ-owned, rural.
  • Industry-specific grants — agriculture, clean energy, manufacturing, healthcare.

What an LLC needs before applying

  1. LLC in good standing with the state — current annual report, no lapsed status.
  2. EIN from the IRS.
  3. Business bank account in the LLC's legal name.
  4. A SAM.gov registration if you're going after federal grants. Free; takes a few weeks.
  5. A DUNS/UEI number — assigned through SAM.gov.
  6. A clear, written description of the project and use of funds.

Why most LLCs never win a grant

  • They apply to programs they don't qualify for — the #1 cause of denials.
  • They use generic copy instead of speaking the funder's language.
  • They wait until the last week — strong applications take time.
  • They never apply at all — they assume grants aren't available to them.

When a loan beats a grant

Grants take months. Reporting requirements can be heavy. If you need capital fast and have predictable revenue, an SBA microloan, line of credit, or business credit card may move you faster than a grant cycle.

Frequently asked questions

Can a single-member LLC get a grant?+

Yes — the LLC's structure rarely matters to grant eligibility. Eligibility hinges on the funder's criteria.

Do I need to be in business for X years?+

Some grants require 1–2 years of operating history. Others are explicitly for startups. Read each program's criteria.

Are grants taxable for LLCs?+

Usually yes. Most business grants are taxable income at the federal level. Talk to a tax professional.
